Lost In Translation

Less than an hour remaining here on November 13th. Don't know why I'm blogging, but here's what's on my mind...

Early in the week I informed my staff that on Tuesday I would like to meet with each of them individually for a year-end evaluation. I asked them all to come prepared to this meeting with a list of three things that they thought they had done well over this past year (or 'strengths') and three things that they'd like to work on (improvements or weaknesses) in the year to come.

For fear of getting answers that I already knew (like: learn English), I tried to further explain that these should be personally work-related. (I guess I was just wanting specifics.)

So fast forward with me to today...

I won't go in to all of their responses, but let's just say if I were to measure by my expectations, these four really knew how to think 'outside the box.' :)

My favorite came when I was meeting with "S." I asked S to share with me what he would like to work on in the year to come.

Expected Answer: Build a stronger relationship with the Mullah in order to advance our projects in _____ village. (maybe?)

Given Answer: "Well...I don't think you know this, but I used to smoke cigarettes. I quit a year and 9 months ago. So every now and then, after a stressful time at work or if some problems arise, I really feel the urge to smoke again. (Pause) What should I do?"

Me: (Trying not to laugh) Umm...I'm not sure. I think you have to take one day at a time. (Offering advice as if I know what I'm talking about, when all the while I'm thinking, "What?") So is this what you want to improve on in the year to come?

S: Yes. I really don't want to think about smoking again.

I'm thinking something got mixed up in my explanation or expectations. Who knew I'd get their New Year's resolutions?!

That's funny! I think you need to start publishing some of your stories! I have a possible way for you to do that...you see the organization I now work for ;) publishes an online magazine for women working overseas. :) Let me know if you want to know more details :)

Meredith-Just you wait until you're working here! :)

Noel-Thanks for the info. Don't know about publishing anything. It makes me too nervous. I'll keep it in mind though.
